A GREAT way to mount your BOSE 301 speakers for excellent sound!

Gentle reader,

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. I really enjoy your comments. It's nice to know my humble activities hold some interest for someone other than myself. My wife, who is the light of my life, just shakes her head at most of it, especially the audio stuff. She too has her quirks.....

I've thought about using flat-screen-TV brackets to mount these BOSE 301 speakers for a while now. They were on CRT-TV wall-mount brackets in the den. I found at Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more! That they had Inland Inland 14"-37" Swivel TV Wall Mount 710S 501460 - Micro Center brackets on sale at half price that are PERFECT for mounting BOSE 301 speakers. BOSE provides four screws on the back of the speakers and sells their own brackets. However, their brackets place the speakers directly on the wall. Never a good place for them.

Below is the newly installed BOSE 301 right speaker mounted on the Inland 710S bracket.

Below is the left speaker from the right side.

Below is a view of the bracket mounted to the back of the BOSE 301 speaker. I did NOT use the factory locations of the mounting screws. Above and below the screws that are located in the black section of the back of the speaker is a pair of posts that seemed designed for screw holes. They line up with two of the factory holes in the Inland brackets. I mounted them then drilled two other holes in the wooden portion as you can see.
Below is the front of the box. Note the curved notches on the mounting surface of the bracket. They coincide exactly with the protrusion on the back on the BOSE 301's rear tweeter. Cool, huh?

Below is the right speaker. Stand swiveled and speaker offset.

So, there you have it. The latest iteration of my obsession with making the best of my listening experience on a budget.

Thanks for looking!

Scott

  1. That was a great idea to wall hang the 301s. I had to make a custom design frame with the help of metal fabrication service, Bayview metals (www.bayviewmetals.com). I had a framed made that's actually a bookshelf type but hung from the ceiling but they also had the space for the 301s. It allows the books to be arranged in different patterns and also the speakers will be well placed.

  2. thanks for the post... i am about to hang two 301 series iv and i too am in a conundrum about brackets (which i bought) and the wall. Not too sure i want to invest in a tv bracket at $35 a pop on ebay plus shipping. I think i'm going to mount the brackets on a 2x4, bend them appropriately so that they point more towards the listener. Btw, what's with the 5 speaker over kill in your den? Shouldn't two of those speakers be in the back?

    1. Research those brackets (box shown), they are perfect. These pictures are quite old. I have simplified significantly.

    2. I, at the time had a separate six-channel system for playing surround sound SACDs. After a while I realized it was silly to have two systems and broke it apart and sold the pieces.

  3. Hi Scott, If you screwed those screws in as shown in pic #9 (Below is the front of the box. Note the curved notches on the mounting surface of the bracket. They coincide exactly with the protrusion on the back on the BOSE 301's rear tweeter. Cool, huh?)
would they damage any internal components of the speaker?
    Thanks
    Chris

    1. That is cool. No there are no components attached to the back of the cabinet.

  5. This is a great post because I was going crazy trying to figure out how to mount the Bose 301s in near future purchase without building a shelf. I need to mount them in a corner because of I do not have the room to set them on a stand. And the Bose WB3 wall mounts wouldn't suffice because they're only for mounting them flush against the wall. With the Inland 710s I can mount them in a corner and swivel the 301s downward and get the best quality sound.

    1. Phil, I am glad that the article is helpful to you. Try and get them equal distance from the two side wall for the reflection of the music.

  6. Thank you so much for this post. I'm looking to relegate my 25+ y/o 301 Series III to the garage and it looks like mounts similiar to yours will do the trick. One question: What size screws did you ise to attach the mounts to the speakers?

    1. The size that fits through the TV mount's holes.

    2. Guess I was going more for the length (sorry about the confusion), but I think I just answered my own question. The thickness of the back panel is 1/2 inch so anything more than that would be overkill and fully penetrate into the cabinet.

Thanks again for the article and great ideas!
